Mission to Peru

August 2006

'I had the privilege of travelling to Peru for two weeks to be part of a work team helping to build two homes for street children in Peru. The centre for Scripture Union Peru is in the capital Lima. It is here that many of the boys are found, living on the streets having been thrown out of their homes because there is no money to feed them or they are so badly treated that they run away from home.

On the streets, life is very hard and the boys have to beg or steal to survive. Many turn to glue sniffing, drugs and alcohol. The boys live in the centre and go to school. When they are old enough they are given help to find a job. Homes are also built in other parts of the country so the boys can live in the area they came from.
For the first week, we travelled to a beautiful place, Kimo in the jungle where we helped to prepare materials for the builders and clear paths.
The second week was spent in the Andes where we made mud bricks for the boys' home.

Five of the boys are already living with their house parents on the site while the rest of the home is being built.

Many of the boys are so badly damaged by what they have experienced that they find it very hard to accept that God loves them but thanks to the work of Scripture Union all the boys now have a hope for the future.'
